Environmental Sustainability and Policy Networks in Tourist Locations

Environmental sustainability is a key concept which EU environmental policy is endeavouring to diffuse throughout the relevant policy domains of member states. This includes tourism policy, which is a key activity of southern member states but which has often not been sustainable. Beginning with an analysis of how the sustainability concept has found resonance with the tourism policies of Italy, Spain and Greece, this paper will examine the role that it has concretely played in a set of tourist locations over a period of 15 years. The focus will be on two locations selected for different environmental outcomes in each of the three member states, and discussion will centre on variations in tourism policy with reference to the role of local policy networks, national policy constraints and the impact of environmental movements.
